What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is an established, recognised system of diagnosis and treatment of health problems that lays its main emphasis on the structural integrity of the body.

Osteopathy can help provide relief for the body’s structural, mechanical and functional problems in people of all ages. It can help to relieve patients from different types of pain and a variety of conditions.

Why use osteopathy?

The main benefits of osteopathy are owed to the unique way the patient’s health is assessed. Specific, manual methods of treatment are applied to each patient according to their individual needs.

Osteopaths are trained to use their hands to investigate the health problems or pain. They treat their patients using a variety of manual techniques.

Techniques may include:

Muscle and connective tissue stretching

Rhythmic joint movements

High velocity thrusts

Gentle release techniques

Visceral Techniques

Your Consultation:

Your first appointment will last approximately 30 minutes. A medical history will be taken. You will be asked about your symptoms and factors that affect them. Detailed questions about your general health, any accidents or trauma and your past medical history including illnesses and operations will also be asked.

It is important that the Osteopath can examine the area of complaint properly and therefore you may be asked to remove some items of clothing.

A full assessment will be carried out getting you to do some simple movements, some orthopaedic and special tests and a manual examination of your musculo-skeletal system.

Once a diagnosis has been made, you will then be treated if it is appropriate to do so. Treatment options, expected time frames of recovery and your expectation of recovery will be discussed with you. Most patients are seen an average of 3-4 times. For some patients maintenance treatment is recommended so seeing the osteopath at set intervals for preventative care. This is usually every 3-6 months but varies depending on the patient.

What should I bring?

Please bring any relevant X-ray, ultrasound and / or MRI reports and medical history including details of any medications.

Post treatment:

Patient response to treatment is varied and depends upon the individual, the method of treatment and the initial complaint. Typically the patient may experience tiredness, minor discomfort, stiffness or heat in the treated area, or the patient may not. Discomfort lasting up to 48 hours post treatment is not always negative and may indicate the initiation of the healing process. Your Osteopath will discuss with you, on an individual basis, what symptoms you are to expect after treatment.
